ISLAMABAD: Pakistan short of 5m housing units

* Shortage annually increasing by 270,000 houses
* Labour minister says govt working on 1m houses for low-income groups

For an estimated population of 169 million, there should be 28 million housing units – as per an average national occupancy rate of six persons per dwelling -but there are approximately 23 million housing units in the country, thus depicting a shortfall of around 5 million units.

ISLAMABAD: Housing projects put on back burner

Dream of the low-income group to have their own shelter may take years as work on the proposed housing projects is slow.

The housing scheme for less-privileged class was announced by the Prime Minister in August last year, with direction for earliest completion. But it seems the concerned authorities are in deep slumber as they have made no headway to fulfil the long-standing dream.

Lahore: CM announces five-marla scheme for rural areas

Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that a five-marla scheme would be started soon for the poor in the rural areas. He said there were hundreds of thousands of people in the province who did not have land for the construction of even one room and the scheme was being initiated for their benefit.

Investors showing interest in Pakistan housing sector

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Housing and Works Rehmatullah Kakar Monday said local and foreign investors were showing interest in housing sector.

“The government has made housing sector attractive for the local as well as for foreign investors,” the Minister said while presiding a meeting of the heads of the attached organizations of the Ministry to review the pace of the ongoing development activities under the Prime Minister Housing programme.

He said that boosting of housing sector would bring economic stability and help generate employment.

ISLAMABAD: Development work starts in sector I-11, I-12

* CDA official says Machinery Pool Organisation activated for earthwork
* Evacuation of land starts

Capital Development Authority (CDA) has started earthwork for development of sectors I-11, I-12 to provide accommodation facility to above 15,000 allottees coveting to have their shelter in federal capital.

MPO: “We have started ground work in sectors of I-11 and I-12. Machinery Pool Organisation (MPO) has moved its machines to the site to complete the earthwork prior to hiring of contractor,” said a senior CDA official.

RAWALPINDI: RDA to cancel town planning of 20 housing societies

* WASA, Cantt boards told to install maximum hydrants

Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has decided to cancel the town planning of 20 housing societies, which failed to transfer plots allocated for mosque, school, community centres and parks in the name of the authority.

According to RDA sources, the last date of notices served by the RDA administration on these housing societies has been expired and some societies have sought more time from the authority.

LAHORE: Government mulls middle way to 'legalise' illegal plazas

Flouting Supreme Court’s strict orders against illegal high rising buildings, the Punjab government braces itself to find a middle way to rescue maximum number of plazas from demolition operation launched from December, 2009. A high-level committee headed by Lahore Division Commissioner Khusro Pervaiz has come into action to design the “middle way” to turn illegal plazas into legal plazas.

Islamabad: BOI extends full support for completion of ‘The Centaurus’

Chairman Board of Investment (BOI), Saleem H. Mandviwalla extended his full support and cooperation to investors in completion of mega projects like ‘The Centaurus’ for fast economic growth in the country.

BOI chairman on Thursday visited The Centaurus project, which involves investment of billions of rupees. Upon his arrival, Project Director Pak Gulf Brigadier (r) Humayun briefed him about the progress of the project. He was reinsured that The Centaurus will be completed on time despite the global recession and domestic unrest.

Balloting for Sector I-16 residential plots would be held today (Thursday) at Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) headquarters, a senior official told APP on Wednesday. He added that infrastructure of the sector was almost complete except water supply.

LAHORE: Low-cost housing in few days

CM Says govt to distribute state land among farmers, agri and veterinary graduates

PUNJAB Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said the government has decided in principle to launch a low-cost housing scheme for homeless people and the project will be formally initiated within a few days.

Speaking at a briefing to PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif on public-welfare projects, the CM said state land will be distributed among landless farmers, agri and veterinary graduates in a transparent manner and land for this purpose had been identified in 21 districts of the province.

KARACHI: IT Media City approved

The long pending project of IT Media City has finally been approved to help boost the IT industry in Pakistan, said Haroon Raza, Minister for IT Sindh.

In a meeting, the Minister said that the project, spread over 200 acres is going to be a key stimulant for the IT industry of Pakistan which can serve as an economic engine for the country. “The project will be launched soon when it is the right time and we can attract more value,” he said.

ISLAMABAD: Work on Bhara Kahu Housing Project soon

Work on Bhara Kahu Housing Project would be initiated soon, Minister for Housing and Works Rehmatullah Kakar told APP on Monday.

The minister said that about 3,000 kanals of land in the area had been purchased, where 15,000 plots would be allotted to the government employees, common people and journalists.

Kakar added that 5,000 plots would be allotted to the registered applicants.

Kakar explained that the allotment would be made to the government employees on ‘no profit no loss basis’. “About two percent quota has been allocated for journalists,” he elaborated.
